Bon Secours Hospital - Limerick

Client Overview

Phased road marking works delivered to programme on one of Ireland's most significant hospital construction projects — for main contractor John Sisk & Son. University Hospital Limerick is one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure projects in Ireland's mid-west. As principal contractor, John Sisk & Son required all car park road markings to be executed to an exacting specification — delivered in sequence with the broader construction programme, and without disrupting site operations.

Project Brief

  • Tight programme deadlines: Road markings had to be completed in sequence with other trades to keep the hospital opening on schedule, with zero tolerance for delay.

  • Live construction traffic: The site remained active with heavy plant and contractor vehicles throughout the works, demanding careful planning and safe working practices at all times.

  • Scale of the works: The car park encompasses over 200 bays across multiple zones, more than 1,000 metres of pedestrian walkways, plus directional arrows, road symbols, lettering, disabled bays, cycle spaces, and reserved carpooling areas — all requiring precision application across a large, curved site footprint.

  • Main contractor coordination: All phases had to be tightly scheduled and communicated with Sisk's site management team to avoid clashes with other trades and maintain programme momentum.

Our Approach

We developed a phased delivery plan in close consultation with Sisk's site management team, structuring the road marking works to align with the construction programme sequence. Rather than a single mobilisation across the full site, each zone was planned, marked, inspected, and handed over in turn — keeping pace with the build without creating bottlenecks for other trades.

In practice, this meant:

  • Engaging directly with Sisk's programme team to agree phasing, access windows, and handover milestones before works commenced.

  • Planning all works around live construction traffic, maintaining safe segregation between operatives and site plant throughout.

  • Applying the full scope of markings to specification: standard and disabled car park bays, cycle spaces, reserved carpooling bays, directional arrows, road symbols, lettering, and over 1,000 metres of pedestrian walkways.

  • Maintaining flexibility throughout — adjusting scheduling as the construction programme evolved and responding quickly to site changes without impacting overall delivery.

The Result

All road marking works were completed on programme and to the satisfaction of John Sisk & Son. The phased approach ensured no disruption to the wider construction timeline, and the finished car park was handed over in a professional, clearly marked condition — ready for the hospital opening.

Key outcomes:

  • 200+ car parking bays marked across multiple zones — standard, disabled, cycle, reserved, and carpooling spaces.

  • Over 1,000 metres of pedestrian walkways clearly delineated across the full site.

  • Full suite of directional arrows, road symbols, and lettering applied to specification.

  • All phases completed on programme — no impact on the hospital opening schedule.

  • Safe, professional delivery throughout a complex, live construction environment.
